It's all about relationship-building
Throughout my career, I’ve done fundraising for organizations both large and small. I even had the chance to assist in the fundraising for my father’s mayoral campaign back when I first joined the workforce. While the experiences were vastly different, the interesting thing I learned is that, no matter the size of an organization, the principals of fundraising remain the same. To become successful and make more money you must be able to:
- Create a plan and set goals
- Build relationships with your donors
- Thank them appropriately (here is a hint: a donation letter is not enough!)
- Let them know how their money is making an impact
- Rinse and repeat…..
Starting from scratch?
As the Community Relations Director for a small organization, I was tasked with building a fundraising program from the ground up. Over five years we went from raising $18,000 a year to nearly $200,000. I researched and developed ideas for a robust and well-rounded development program. That included building the necessary infrastructure to grow and sustain the program into the future.
